Quilt Binding

So what is Quilt Binding? Most quilters know but for those of you who are beginner quilters, its the material used to border your quilt and tie up the loose edges of your quilt. This is usually the last step when making your quilt.

What does quilt binding look like?

Binding can be narrow or wide and will depend on the amount of coverage you need and the style you want for your finished quilt. Quilters will usually use a contrasting or similar color of what’s already in the quilt but you can really choose anything you want. My Aunt who is a famous quilter here in East Tennessee usually uses a two layer approach to binding her quilts so it’s more durable and will ensure the ends don’t unravel.

What Fabric Works Best for Binding?

The best way to choose a design is of course to know if it’s for a baby boy or girl. If the gender won’t be known until birth, then going with the more neutral gender colors of yellow or white will be a safer bet. You will most certainly want to find out what colors the nursery will be done in may help to match the baby quilt with the room. These aren’t necessarily must have’s but you should consult the mother-to-be first.

To bind tight curves and deep angles, it’s best to use stretchy bias strips since this will have some give to it and be easy to use when working around corners.

Of course, if you don’t want to use or make your own binding, you certainly can save time by purchasing quilt binding. Of course, this will be dependent on if you can find binding to match your quilt patterns and colors, but this shortcut will be a big time saver for you. Quilt Binding machines are a great investment and if you are a big time quilter and need to save time so you can get to your next quilt, then this is what you need to get! Since Christmas is coming up, then it would be a great time to ask for your very own binding machine! Hope you’ve been good this year!
